About Us

The Playgroup is held in a large, safe hall in Sherwood Community Centre, with access to an enclosed outdoor play area. There are child-sized toilets off the main room. The entrance door to our playgroup is closed at all times, with controlled access.

Aims of the Playgroup

Our playgroup aims to help meet the needs of pre-school children by creating an environment in which children learn through play alongside staff who sensitively develop and extend their interests alongside a flexible and appropriate curriculum.
We take children from the age of two and there are a maximum of 26 children in each session who are cared for by our experienced staff. They encourage children to develop independence and learn new skills.

Typical Session

The large spacious room has a variety of different areas of continuous provision to support children’s learning and development which includes role play, a book area, mark making materials, materials for painting and creating and much more. Books and opportunities for mark making and expression are also found in many other areas including outdoors. In addition other activities and resources are available reflecting and extending children’s current interests alongside planned activities. Planned activities extending children’s learning and interests and practitioners use the Birth to Five Non Statutory guidance to support planning to ensure coverage of the areas of learning within the EYFS framework. Activities and resources also reflect the seasons, the weather and celebrations and festivals as well as extending children’s learning and interests. We spend around 50% of our week using the outdoors in all weathers whether that be our garden area, the grounds of the community centre in small supervised groups or through our forest school sessions. We are fortunate to be adjacent to a Wildlife Meadow and Woodland which is home to blue bells in spring, butterflies and ladybirds in summer and full of colourful richness which the children love to explore. The sessions are loosely structured to be flexible with timings if children are particularly interested in a theme or spontaneous activity.

Generally we have indoor access for the first part of the session which includes stories and singing and some snack and small group activities. The second part of the session is more outdoor based but children additionally have free access to indoors and the toilet. We do find when the weather is warmer and in the summer term the children are mostly outside and many of the activities mentioned above additionally take place in our spacious garden area. We have an outdoor area called Sparkle Space which is used all year round with musical instruments, fairy lights, cushions and sensory items it is used as a chill out and relaxation area and for small groups for music and singing in addition to being a cosy corner for children who may not be walking independently.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

A good standard of behaviour is maintained within the Playgroup by the positive expectations of staff from the children in their care. Co-operation from parents reinforces this. Children are encouraged to :

  • Respect themselves and keep themselves safe.
  • Care for others in the Playgroup.
  • Look after the playgroup to keep it a happy and safe place for everyone.
  • Children are constantly praised for their efforts and care for others.
